The passing of Baroness Thatcher this week has made news around the world, with much spoken and written in equal measure by allies and detractors about her undoubted influence on British industry and the country's place in the world.
The heavy lift and project cargo industries largely rely on a country's heavy manufacturing base for business and the 1980s, the decade that has come to be most associated with Britain's first female prime minister, were a disaster for the UK's traditional, smokestack industries and the companies which delivered logistics services to them. On the flipside, the de-industrialisation in the 1980s did see a considerable amount of work for companies which specialise in the dismantling and shipment of redundant factory lines, steel mills, smelters, plus assorted items of heavy equipment, which shows that even the darkest cloud has a silver lining.
One of the interesting angles on her passing for the heavy lift industry is how different the world looks now compared to Baroness Thatcher's 1980s heyday. Western Europe and the US rustbelt were still major manufacturing areas, with less heavy engineering in countries such as India and China. BRICs were what you built houses with and the USSR stood as a potent threat thoughout much of Europe. At the same time, many financial markets remained tightly regulated and credit hard to come by.
Fast forward three decades and the business world is a much different place. Much heavy industry has left Western Europe and the rustbelt is truly that in the USA. BRIC is spoken of as the future while much of the world is coming to terms with the fallout from the generous over-relaxing of financial rules, which started under Thatcherism and Reaganomics. Heavy lift shipping lines now do business on round-the-world voyages as the industry has become truly global.

Rickmers-Linie has added a new multipurpose heavy lift vessel to its fleet, the 19,100 dwt Pacific Winter (pictured right), while Nordana has placed an order with Italian yard Visentini for the first of its next generation of multipurpose ro-ro vessels, scheduled for delivery in May 2014.

Money is being spent at APP Portonave, a port located in Santa Carina, Brazil, as a number of infrastructure investments to improve its terminal facilities are unveiled (pictured top right).

Toll Global Forwarding UK is to pack its bags and move to a new London Heathrow HQ in October, while Transport Technics & Services International (TTS) has already done so, relocating its Dubai HQ. Lifting chain manufacturer, RUD Ketten Rieger & Dietz has opened a new 6,000 sq m plant in Brisbane, Australia (pictured right).
Liebherr International Group has seen its turnover grow by 9 percent year-on-year in 2012 to USD8.9 billion, its mobile cranes division growing by 12 percent to USD2.54 billion, a USD261.4 million boost; while Cosco Shipping (Coscol) saw its 2012 revenue grow by 22.1 percent to USD1.02 billion, although net profit fell to USD3.09 million.

Gently did it for for U-Freight Group (UFL) brand, Dalian China Express International Transportation as it moved an ultra-long cargo through Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport (pictured top right).
Transafe Logistics, working with Aviacon Zitotrans, has airfreighted a 41.7 tonne gas turbine from Russia to Korea, while Tecniproject has shifted a complete ammonia plant from Puerto Mejillones, Chile to Xingang, China (pictured second right).
EFIS Air, a division of ECS Group, has delivered the fourth and last stage of the Ariane rocket from Paris Vatry airport to Cayenne, Guyana, while four 36-tonne gas terminal loading arms and ancillary equipment have been shipped by Cory Logistics from Whitstable, UK to Indonesia.
Van der Vlist's St Petersburg branch recently received a shipment of dryers from China that required shipping 1,250 km to Efremov, while ALE used its own SPMTs fitted with special saddles to move a luxury super yacht at a shipyard in Poole, UK.

After six months as interim chair, Peter Gaulton (pictured top right) is now chairman for a two-year term of the seven-member board of directors of Saint John Port Authority. When Friday Flyer gossip columnist Evie Aufheben was invited via press release to read Panalpina's "costumer" magazine 'connect', she thought she was about to read a magazine to rival Vogue. The absence of designer faabrics was obvious, however, as she put the magazine down when she realised the o and the u in the word costumer had been transposed.
Evie notes that in the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association's (SCRA) awards, Tradelossa took first place in the 'Rigging Job of the Year' category for a gas generator facility installation in Chihuahua, northern Mexico, whilst Burkhalter Rigging took awards for both 'Rigging Job of the Year' and 'Hauling Job of the Year' for positioning and setting new railroad bridge and the removal of an existing road bridge. Meanwhile Volga-Dnepr Group has won two top prizes at the Wings of Russia National Aviation Awards. Congratulations all.
