September 17 - The Port of Virginia handled 214,355 teus in August, setting its all-time high for teu volume handled in a single month.
The port's recorded cargo volume showed an 8.1 percent year-on-year increase, while its August operating income increased 168 percent compared with the same period last month, at USD2.2 million.
The port also worked 169 vessels in August, including container, breakbulk and ro-ro ships.
"We are two months into fiscal 2015 and have posted strong volumes and modest profitability, but this is only one part of the goal," said John F. Reinhart, ceo and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority (VPA).
"We're continuing to implement constructive changes to better serve our customers and stakeholders," added Reinhart.
This week saw the port's Portsmouth Marine Terminal (PMT) re-open after an idle three years, which was reported by HLPFI on September 15.
