NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers has placed an order for two heavy lift vessels from Nanjing Jinling shipyard.
The newbuilds will be delivered between August 2021 and January 2022.
Measuring 138 m in length, with a deadweight capacity of 12,470 tons (11,312.6 tonnes), the ships have been designed to handle project cargo. Each vessel will feature two cranes with a combined lifting capacity of 800 tonnes.
According to NYK, they will replace the company’s heavy lift vessels Kibi and Kamo, which have a maximum lifting capacity of 450 tonnes.
The Japanese carrier added that the vessels will be used to transport wind energy cargoes as well as LNG plant.
“The heavy lift and project cargo market is still struggling,” explained NYK. “However, we believe this will improve as projects start picking up. The movement of project cargo should increase from 2020 onwards.”
