July 8 - The US Department of Transportation Maritime Administration has appointed Port of New Orleans president and ceo, Gary LaGrange, to its maritime transportation system national advisory committee.
The committee includes executives of shipping lines, port authorities, and shippers, as well as heads of government agencies involved in marine transportation.
LaGrange joins the committee for a two-year term, which begins this month.
The objective of the committee is to provide information, advice and recommendations to the US Secretary of Transportation on matters relating to the country's marine transportation system and its integration with other transport modes.
Among the issues discussed will be: obstacles hindering the effective use of shortsea shipping; improvements to waterborne transport to reduce congestion on roads; modernising the maritime workforce and inspiring new recruits; and driving innovation in the industry.
