While the US port of Wilmington was welcoming its first load of SSAB/Swedish steel for the 2018-19 winter season, UK logistics specialist AV Dawson secured a three-year extension to support British Steel’s steel rolling operations at two sites.
Wilmington’s cargo arrived on Royal Wagenborg’s geared bulk ship, Amazoneborg, marking the 13th consecutive season that Swedish Steel has routed its steel plate, cold rolled steel sheets in coils, as well as its hot rolled steel sheets in coils through the port.
The port said that importing through GT USA’s Wilmington terminal allows for continuity of supply to Midwestern customers normally serviced through Great Lakes ports. Once the Great Lakes are closed for navigation each winter, cargo is re-directed through the port from December until March.
Amazoneborg carried over 11,600 tonnes of steel plate and coils, which is anticipated to be the first of eight shipments to Wilmington for the 2018-19 season.
In the UK, AV Dawson has operated on-site logistics at British Steel’s special profiles facility in Skinningrove and at its Teesside Beam Mill in Lackenby for over five years. During that time it has carried out a variety of jobs including, de-scaling machinery, on site logistics support, managing the recycling and waste solutions and carrying out the deep cleaning operations during shut downs.
