The European association for abnormal road transport and mobile cranes (ESTA) has joined the International Road Transport Union (IRU) as an affiliate member.

ESTA says its membership will help increase the organisation's influence with the European Commission (EC) and international road transport authorities.

Ton Klijn, ESTA director, said: "Our clear goal is to get exceptional transport much higher up the agenda of the relevant authorities, and the IRU can help us do that.

"The IRU is a highly professional lobbying organisation and by joining them, ESTA will have much more clout than we could have on our own."

According to ESTA, the IRU, along with the Dutch association TLN and its own lobbying efforts, was instrumental in obtaining support from the EC to resolve a dispute with Spain last year, after the country tried to enforce new regulations that discriminated against international hauliers.

The IRU has its global headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and has offices worldwide including in Brussels, Beijing, Moscow and Istanbul.
