November 17 - Broekman Distriport is expanding its terminal at the Port of Rotterdam by 50,000 sq m to serve the western Scandinavian market.

The expansion at the terminal in Botlek Rotterdam will include the construction of a ro-ro ramp to tranship oil and gas and offshore equipment, forest products and non-ferrous metals.  The company is also investing infrastructure improvements surrounding the terminal.

Scandinavian shipping line Norwegian Sea-Cargo confirmed it has entered into a long-term partnership with Broekman Distriport, and it will use the terminal twice weekly upon completion of the extension.

The new 'Continental Hub' is going to play a substantial role for the Port of Rotterdam in its trade with Scandinavian countries, said Broekman Distriport. Incoming goods from the Asian region can be collected in Rotterdam and transported in one batch to Norway. It works both ways: the Port of Rotterdam is a strategic place for distributing Scandinavian goods to western and southern Europe and Asia.

Emile Hoogsteden, director of containers, breakbulk and logistics at the Port of Rotterdam Authority, said: "We are strongly committed to this segment because it delivers a great deal of added value to the port. We're seeing a strong upturn in breakbulk this year. We aim to be a full-service port, with a complete cluster of activities and optimum connections. This partnership reconfirms the strength of Rotterdam Breakbulk Port."

Broekman Group will begin developing the new terminal at the start of 2015, with works expected to complete during April 2015.
