February 2 - Atlas Logistics Network (ALN) has formed a separate organisation dedicated to the breakbulk and project cargo industry - the Atlas Breakbulk Alliance - which will be headed up by well known industry personality, Albert Pegg.
Pegg, who has over 40 years of experience in the breakbulk sector and was instrumental in assisting the Port of Antwerp market its advantages for breakbulk and project cargo shipments over the past few years, will take on the role of director of the newly-formed alliance, which HLPFI understands has been created as a result of requests from existing members of the ALN, a network of forwarders that focus on general cargo logistics.
Pegg told HLPFI that there was has been a growing demand from some of the members within the network that are also active in breakbulk and project forwarding for a separate alliance within the existing network, with the same operating principles as the Atlas Logistics Network.
He says: "We are putting the finishing touches to the new alliance at the moment. It will be a not for profit operation consisting typically of family-owned, home grown businesses, that is run by the members for the members.
"Other than in the world's largest countries such as the USA, China and Brazil, the alliance will be an exclusive network offering an array of benefits similar to the ALN. These will include: insolvency and payment monitoring; online cargo insurance; house bills of lading; global carrier agreements and comprehensive ICT support."
As well as his pivotal role at the Belgian port, Pegg has also served as managing director of West African liner agency ASECO and Safmarine Belgium. He headed up SafmarineMPV's liner services and has held positions on the boards of the Antwerp Shipping Federation, Seagha and Portilog.
For the past eight years, Pegg has served as an independent consultant to a number of companies, including the Antwerp Port Authority, Sarens and CMC.
