May 19 - Effective June 1, the port of Antwerp will grant a discount to seagoing vessels that use alternative technology to reduce emissions of particulates.
The new discount comes on top of the existing ESI discount, which means that in some cases ships can benefit from a 30 percent reduction in port dues when they call at Antwerp.
With this additional environmental discount, which is being introduced for a period of three years and will be gradually reduced, Antwerp Port Authority aims to encourage investment into green technologies for more sustainable shipping.
Vessels will be able to claim the discount as of June 1 is they can demonstrate that they either make effective use of scrubbers (in closed mode) or are powered by LNG for a period of at least 24 hours before they call at the port of Antwerp.
Ships powered by LNG can receive a 20 percent discount, while those making use of closed scrubbers will get a 15 percent discount. The percentages will then be gradually reduced, with respective 15 and 10 percent discounts set for 2016, and 10 and 5 percent set for 2017.
