May 5 - ALE has been awarded a contract to transport 1,186 railcars from Poland to Saudi Arabia.
The railcars - which weigh up to 30 tonnes each and measure 14 m x 4.6 m x 3 m - will be shipped from Gdansk to Dammam in consignments of 60 railcars at a time over a period of 22 months.
From Dammam, the cars will be transported 215 km overland to Saudi Arabian Railways' yard in Nariyah in the eastern province of the country.
"As the infrastructure sector continues to develop in Saudi Arabia, with the increase in construction of metros and railways, ALE has made significant investments in equipment and expertise to help meet the requirements of clients in the region," said Andrew Spink, general manager of ALE's branch in the country.
The company's Saudi Arabian operation is also involved in the transportation of heavy concrete segments for the Riyadh metro, as well as several shipments of additional railcars and locomotives.
ALE claims that its recent contract will be the largest amount of railcars Saudi Arabia has ever received. The first shipment of cars will be received in July.
