Effective February 3, WEC Lines will offer a barge connection between between Moerdijk (Combined Cargo Terminals), the Netherlands, to Duisburg (Duisburg Gateway Terminal, DGT) in Germany.
WEC is working in with A2B-online, Tailwind Shipping Lines and Danser Group for the connection. “With this new barge service, we offer a competitive alternative to road transport for our clients in the Ruhr area into Southern Europe and vice versa”, stated Brian Vaz, intermodal analyst and projects for WEC Lines. “This supports our commitment to respond to market demand while ensuring a timely, secure and eco-friendly delivery.”
Duisburg Gateway Terminal is one of the world’s largest inland ports and aims to be the first terminal to be operated completely greenhouse gas neutral. Every Monday afternoon and Wednesday evening there will be a barge departure from Moerdijk, with return services departing every Tuesday and Friday evening.
Connecting with WEC Lines’ NWC CAI service that operates between Moerdijk and Iberia, this scheduled service also means an expansion of the port of Moerdijk as an intermodal hub. At the same time, the companies said that the barge connection should also contribute to making the road network on the Moerdijk-Ruhr corridor more sustainable and less congested.
On January 19, WEC Lines introduced the new setup of its UK/ IE Iberia service. One dedicated service directly connects Spain to Dublin and Liverpool, called the UK/IE Spain service. Another dedicated loop directly links Portugal to Dublin and Liverpool, called the UK/IE Portugal service.
To/from Bilbao, WEC Lines offers seamless rail connections to and from Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid, Zaragoza, and Agoncillo (La Rioja). To/from Leixões, optimal connections to the Canary Islands and Morocco are available, providing more flexibility and efficiency.
