AtoB@C Shipping has christened Stellemar, its second plug-in hybrid vessel in Ystad, Sweden. It also partnered with EFO and committed to a set of measures to minimise emissions from their respective transport activities.
According to ESL Shipping, Stellamar has features including shore power connectivity, battery installations, and enhanced cargo intake. The ship can carry a wide range of bulk and breakbulk cargo, including steel, forest products, fertilisers and project cargoes, it said.
Stellamar is second in the series of twelve plug-in hybrid general cargo vessels, delivered in April 2024. The fleet expansion follows the introduction of a series of new vessels. Ecomar, the third vessel in the series, is currently en route from India to Europe, and Aquamar, the fourth, is nearing completion at the shipyard. The production of the 10th vessel, Astramar, began in July.
As part of this sustainability drive, AtoB@C Shipping in joint venture with Sweden’s EFO, will commit to a set of measures to reduce CO2 emissions from their ocean transport activities. This will involve substituting 10 percent of the annual fuel consumption of EFO’s shipments with renewable alternatives, resulting in a projected 8.5 percent reduction in lifecycle emissions.
“We are pleased to have found in AtoB@C Shipping a shipping company that not only shares our long-term vision but has also provided us with a tangible solution today to begin reducing our emissions immediately”, says Andreas Ukmar, ceo at EFO.
The firms have also agreed to implement AtoB@C Shipping’s virtual arrival system as a standard operational practice. This optimises the speed of vessels when there is a known delay in port.
So far two voyages have been performed with 100 percent renewable fuel under the contract between EFO and AtoB@C with plug-in hybrid vessel Electramar unloading the second cargo in Oxelösund, Sweden last week.
