Norden will add a pair of new 17,500 dwt multipurpose vessels to its roster next year.

The shipping line said that it will lease the two newbuilds, with options to purchase. Furthermore, it has an option of declaring an additional two vessel leases with delivery in 2027.

“To further enhance our service to customers, Norden is building a core fleet of multipurpose general cargo vessels. We are dedicated to becoming a leading project carrier and provide our customers with efficient shipping solutions and the addition of these vessels underscores our commitment to innovation and decarbonisation in the maritime industry,” said Thomas N. Mikkelsen, head of projects and parcelling at Norden.

The vessels will have the bridge located at the front of the ship, optimising space for project cargo such as wind turbine blades. The Danish shipping group said the newbuilds are highly fuel efficient and are biofuel compatible.

Since entering the project cargo segment in 2023, Norden has focused on growing its position. It believes the multipurpose segment benefits from favourable supply fundamentals with a rapidly ageing fleet and low orderbook, coupled with a strong projected demand outlook. Norden said that with these two new leases, it now operate a fleet of 45 specialised vessels dedicated to transporting wind energy components, large-scale batteries, industrial plant components and breakbulk cargoes.

In July 2023, Norden completed the acquisition of Thorco Projects.
