Container shipping giant Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) said that it has started to use biofuel in its vessels calling at Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Having trialled a 10 percent biofuel blend earlier this year, MSC is now incorporating a 30 percent blend into its routine shipping activities operations.
“When using such blended fuel, we can expect an estimated 15-20 percent reduction in absolute CO2 emissions,” said Bud Darr, executive vice president, maritime policy and government affairs, MSC Group. “The potential CO2 reduction in the bio component of these fuels could reach 80-90 percent, which we will monitor and confirm over time.”
