The Grimaldi Group is expecting Eco Napoli to arrive in the Mediterranean in May this year.

Brought in to strengthen the Grimaldi Group’s ro-ro connection between Türkiye’s Gemlik and Ambarlı, Patras in Greece, and Italy’s Trieste, Eco Napoli has a length of 238 m, a beam of 34 m, a gross tonnage of 67,3111 tonnes and a service speed of 20.8 knots.

Compared with previous series of ro-ro vessels deployed by the Grimaldi Group for shortsea routes, the new ship can hold double the load on its seven decks – two of which can be hoisted. It can carry 7,800 linear m of rolling freight, equivalent to around 500 trailers and 180 cars.

The vessel can reach the same speed as previous generation ro-ro ships whilst halving CO2 emissions per unit transported. Eco Napoli is also equipped with electronically controlled engines as well as an exhaust gas cleaning system for the reduction of sulphur and particulate emissions. Its 5 MWh mega lithium batteries, which are recharged during navigation via shift generators and 350 sq m of solar panels, allow for fully electric operations.

“Thanks to their outstanding operational and environmental performance, and our continued investments in the routes we serve, we will continue to enhance our motorways of the sea offering more capacity, efficiency, and sustainability,” said Emanuele Grimaldi, managing director of the Grimaldi Group.

Expected to arrive in the Mediterranean from China in early May, Eco Napoli will be carrying approximately 7,00 linear m of rolling cargo – including trucks and agricultural machinery.

In January 2025, HLPFI reported that the Grimaldi Group had added the Great Cotonou to its fleet.
