In late July, Russian all-cargo carrier AirBridgeCargo Airlines (ABC) moved 66 baby giraffes from Johannesburg, South Africa to Zhengzhou, China via Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport.
The animals were bound for various animal parks in the Zhengzhou region. Weighing a combined total of 38 tonnes, some of the giraffes stood as tall as 3 m. They required special transportation containers (as well as food, water and onboard animal specialists) to keep them safe, secure and comfortable during their journey.
The carrier’s abc CARE live animals team ensured all of the flight and handling procedures complied with IATA’s Live Animals Regulations.
“In the first half of 2018, we witnessed an 18 percent increase in the transportation of live animals, which reflects our reputation as a proven and reliable service provider for these specialist air cargo services,” highlighted Sergey Lazarev, general director of ABC.
