Finnlines has taken delivery of Finneco II, the second of three Eco-class ro-ro vessels, at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Jiangsu) in China.
The vessel will operator on Finnlines’ Biscay line, where it will join sister vessel Finneco I. It is part of the company’s EUR500 million (USD539 million) newbuilding programme that includes the three hybrid ro-ro vessels and two hybrid ro-pax vessels. The third ro-ro vessel, Finneco III, will be delivered in the beginning of June 2022. The ro-pax vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2023.
Finneco II is 238 m long and has a cargo capacity of 5,800 lane metres. Compared with the largest vessels in today’s Finnlines fleet, the cargo carrying capacity of the hybrid newbuilds will increase by nearly 40 percent. It is equipped with a hoist able deck that enables Finnlines to load rolling freight up to 7 m.
The classification society Rina has assigned an additional class notation of ‘green plus’ for the vessel’s environmental performance. The vessel has been fitted with two-stroke main engines, which have a lower specific fuel consumption than four-stroke engines. An air lubrication system under the keel will reduce frictional and hydrodynamic resistance and consequently reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Zero emissions during port calls can be achieved with a battery power bank of 5 MW. The batteries are recharged during sailing and 600 sq m of solar panels will also generate power. Furthermore, an exhaust gas cleaning system will cut air emissions and reduce harmful particles.
