The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) has added Chipolbrok to its controlled carrier list due the Chinese government’s part ownership of the company.
Chipolbrok is jointly owned by the governments of China and Poland, with its headquarters in Shanghai, China.
The FMC found that the government of China wields more control over the multipurpose shipping line’s corporate structure and commercial activities than its Polish cohort, following a review of the company’s ownership structure.
Controlled carriers – ocean common carriers operating in the US-foreign trades that are, or whose operating assets are, directly or indirectly owned or controlled by a foreign government – are subject to enhanced regulatory oversight by the FMC. The controlled carrier list does not include government controlled or linked non-vessel-operating common carriers, freight forwarders, or marine terminal operators regardless of where they do business.
It comes after US president Donald Trump continues to bring in tough measures on China-linked vessels.
