HLPFI reported in September 2024 that Carisbrooke was preparing to deploy the GT Wings AirWing system. The company has now successfully installed the equipment aboard its Vectis Progress vessel.

Carisbrooke received GBP3.7 million (USD4.74 million) in funding from non-profit organisation Innovate UK and the Department for Transport to advance the project.

Modifications to the vessel include 9.6 tonnes of steel replaced below deck, an 8.7-tonne pedestal installed, and 7.5 km of electrical cabling fitted. At its peak, 27 people were involved in the works.

Whilst sea trials take place, Carisbrooke will focus on full automation and optimisation of the vessel. Early projections suggest a fuel consumption reduction of 8.3 percent, with the possibility for even greater savings on the company’s Canada – Europe route.

Earlier this week, HLPFI reported that Carisbrooke had received funding towards the renewal of its fleet.
