The funds will be used to fund the construction of two identical modern 7,700 dwt general cargo vessels, which Carisbrooke Shipping has ordered from Thecla Bodewes Shipyards in the Netherlands.

Of the so-called Labrax series, the ships have modern diesel-electric propulsion systems that are designed for fuel efficiency and sustainability, along with a unique bow shape that contributes to carbon reductions. The vessels’ engines could be converted to CO2-neutral liquid in place of low carbon fuels in the future.

“With this financing, we are once again emphasising our commitment to supporting our customers in the transformation to climate-friendly and CO2-efficient shipping,” said Andreas Ufer, member of the management board of KfW IPEX-Bank.

With delivery scheduled for 2026, the ships will be deployed in the European shortsea market.

The financing is covered by Atradius, a Dutch export credit insurance company. Part of KfW Group, KfW IPEX-Bank supports German and European industrial sector companies that operate in global markets.

In September 2024, Carisbrooke was preparing to deploy a prototype airwing.
