After announcing strong passenger figures for 2017, Luxembourg Airport is looking back on its most successful year yet for cargo.
In 2017 a total of 938,000 tonnes of airfreight passed through the airport.
Whilst Cargolux is a major user, Qatar Airways is a strong contributor to the growth, increasing its flights from 15 to 27 per week in 2017.
Atlas Air remains in third position, Silk Way West Airlines climbs to fourth spot and China Airlines is fifth in regards to transported tonnes of freight at Luxembourg.
In order to cope with the growth of the cargo business, Luxembourg Airport started the construction of a EUR40 million (USD49.85 million) extension of its cargo apron in early 2017. This will increase the total capacity of the cargo apron from 8 to 12 parking positions, all able to accommodate Boeing 747-8 freighter aircraft. The first two positions will be operational in September 2018, the last two positions at the end of October 2018.
The airport authority says that in 2017 the handling of over-dimensional airfreight was an important contributor to volumes handled at Luxembourg Airport Cargocenter, which is operated by LuxairCARGO.
