Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam has completed a major refit on Fred. Olsen Windcarrier’s jack-up vessel Brave Tern.
The main operation, according to Damen, was the insertion of a 20 m section into the main boom of the 800-tonne capacity crane, allowing it to reach a height of 120 m.
The project required the unreeving of all the crane wires before the boom could be down to rest on a support structure built from containers. The boom was then cut in two and the new section inserted and secured using flanges.
A series of load tests were conducted before the crane was certified ready for operations.
According to Damen, the upgrade, which allows the vessel to install and maintain the next generation of wind turbines, is part of a wider improvement programme by Fred. Olsen Windcarrier for both of its jack-up vessels.
