Basra Gateway Terminal (BGT) recently welcomed the first direct ro-ro service between the UAE and Iraq operated by DP World.
The ro-ro service connects Jebel Ali in Dubai with Umm Qasr. Compared to the usual 14-day period for cross-border land transport between the two countries, the service offers a travel time of 36 hours from the port of Jebel Ali to Umm Qasr.
HLPFI reported in May that the service is well suited to the transport of palletised or project cargo. Purpose-built ro-ro vessels allow greater flexibility in the planning and movement of over-dimensional packages on lowbed and heavy-duty trailers.
