October 23 - BBC Chartering plans to introduce a low sulphur surcharge to offset additional costs incurred by switching to cleaner fuels in sulphur emission control areas (ECAs), effective January 1, 2015.

As of January 2015, all shipping lines and carriers are subject to advanced low sulphur fuel regulations on trades crossing North Europe/Baltic, the USA and Canada.

The sulphur content in fuel has to be reduced from a maximum of 1 percent to a maximum of 0.1 percent, which will have a significant impact on bunker costs.

BBC says that it is in the process of evaluating the specific cost impact and believes that a separate charge will provide better transparency to its customers on the additional costs arising from the new environmental requirements.

The carrier will notify its clients on further details of the planned surcharge in the coming weeks.
