May 2 - Maritime classification services society the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has released its new guide: Advisory on Exhaust Gas Scrubber Systems.
The guide describes how vessel owners and operators can utilise exhaust scrubber systems to meet current and future environmental requirements.
The shipping industry is seeking ways to meet increasingly stringent low sulphur fuel requirements. Fuel switching, which is a frequently used tactic in emission control areas, is not expected to be a viable option in the long term. The use of higher price low sulphur fuels - as well as exhaust scrubber systems - are both ways of addressing the emission requirements.
"This Advisory highlights the relevant regulatory and technical considerations that should be taken into account when making decisions on how to comply with emissions requirements," explained ABS vice president for operational and environmental performance, Howard Fireman.
