Sarens successfully replaces chiller in operation at the Braehead Shopping Centre in Glasgow
Sarens completed in January 2025 a successful chiller replacement operation at the Braehead Shopping Centre in Glasgow, Scotland. The project, carried out on behalf of G&O Refrigeration, required the precise lifting and positioning of chiller units onto the shopping centre’s roof.
The operation took place from January 27 to January 30, 2025, with Sarens deploying its LTM 1450 crane, equipped with a 70M luffer and full ballast. Given the proximity of the shopping centre to Glasgow Airport, the team had to ensure compliance with height restrictions, maintaining a maximum jib height of 45M. A detailed planning phase included a site visit, engineering reviews, and pre-execution meetings to align all parties on the sequence of works. Sarens’ ability to provide a comprehensive contract lift solution played a key role in securing the project.
The LTM 1450 mobile crane, supported by an AC 130 rigging crane, was selected for its luffer capabilities, crucial for precise placement of the chiller units. The equipment was transported via Sarens trucks, requiring four additional transports. Set-up was completed in six hours, ensuring efficiency in execution. Each 3,2-tonne chiller unit was lifted to a height of 15M at a 76M radius. The lift proceeded smoothly, with the crane slewing and placing the units into position as planned.
Working near a public shopping centre required Sarens to implement seclusion zones for safety. Coordination with Glasgow Airport was also necessary to comply with airspace regulations. Despite these challenges, Sarens completed the job on time and within the client’s requirements.
Sarens was chosen for this project thanks to its reliable fleet availability and previous support on a smaller job for the client. The company’s commitment to engineering excellence and execution precision ensured a seamless lift, reinforcing its reputation as a trusted partner in complex lifting operations.
“This was a full Sarens contract lift with no subcontractors involved, and the equipment performed flawlessly within the required timescales,” said Gary McGinty, Sarens Regional Manager in Scotland.
Sarens is proud to have contributed to the successful chiller replacement at Braehead Shopping Centre, once again demonstrating expertise in safe and efficient heavy lifting solutions.
