Crane rental company Tinlohi has utilised its 250-tonne capacity Grove GMK5250XL-1and 400-tonne capacity Grove GMK6400 cranes in a tandem setup for two separate operations in northwest Spain.
The first job took place in Palencia where the cranes dismantled a wind turbine and lowered the components from a height of 90 m.
For the operation, the GMK6400 was located next to the turbine mast, where it could support the extra weight and lift at a 24 m radius, bearing two thirds of the total weight. The GMK5250XL-1 was set up to lift at a 22 m radius.
“Although each load was only 11 tonnes, the 36 m-long turbine blades were too tricky to handle using just one crane,” said Alberto Lozano, Tinlohi’s commercial director, who also mentioned that the strong winds at the site, combined with the unusual profile of the components, made them more difficult to handle.
The second operation took place in Valladolid where the cranes were tasked with dismantling a 55-tonne tube from a gasification plant. For this lift each crane bore an equal share of the weight.
“This was another challenging project, as we had to coordinate the swing of each lift to pass the tube section between silos into the staging area,” continued Lozano.
