Engineered transport and heavy lift specialist Sarens supported Virginia International Terminals (VIT) with the load-in of the first batch of monopiles for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) farm at the Portsmouth Marine Terminal (PMT).
PMT is serving as the hub for the offshore wind project, which is under development by Dominion Energy and will be located some 43-67 km off the coast of Virginia. It will consist of 176 wind turbine generators connected to three offshore substations.
The first eight monopile foundations for the project were delivered to PMT during October last year. Prior to the delivery, Sarens’ team in Rostock, Germany, loaded the units onboard the heavy load carrier Sun Shine for transport to the Naval Operations Base in Norfolk. From there, tugs from McAllister Towing guided the ship and monopiles to PMT.
At PMT, Sarens unloaded the monopiles, swapped out the shipping saddles, moved the units to storage, and returned the shipping saddles to the vessel.
From now through to 2025, Sarens will receive and load out a total of 176 monopiles, 176 transition pieces, and jackets and topsides for the three offshore substations.
