Sarens has completed heavy lifting work at a pair of power plants in Flémalle and Seraing, Belgium.
The power plants are located just 5 km apart in the Liège region.
At Flémalle, as part of the 875 MW power plant’s infrastructure upgrade, Sarens lifted and transported six modules with gross weights ranging from 160-336 tonnes including special lifting frames, as well as three drums weighing 21-176 tonnes, also including special lifting frames.
A Liebherr LR1750 and LR11000 performed tandem lifts, while SPMTs were used to shift the cargoes around the plant, although the job proved tricky due to limited space and strict safety protocols.
In Seraing, Sarens built an extension next to the existing power similar to that at Flémalle. The module was transported on 24 SPMT axle lines from storage to the site. Here, a CC6800 crawler crane and a CC3800 as a tailing crane were used to build the extension. Towards the end of the project, the CC3800 was swapped out for an LR1750.
One of the challenges faced by Sarens’ crew was keeping a close eye on the high-voltage power line that traverses the site, securing safety for all project components and crew involved. The power plant was able to continue its operations throughout the project.
