UK-based Robert Wynn & Sons has utilised its heavy lift ro-ro barge Terra Marique to deliver four 170-tonne transformers to the berth at Pembroke power station on behalf of Germany’s Züst & Bachmeier
The project commenced in Rotterdam where the four transformers were loaded at Mammoet’s facility at Schiedam, using a shoreside crane to load the cargo on to mats and stands onboard the vessel. Rober Wynn & Sons’ crew then lashed and secured the cargo to ensure its safety throughout the voyage to the port of Pembroke.
Upon arrival at Pembroke, the cargo was made ready for discharge. The offloading operation was planned over two tidal windows, taking into consideration the restrictions of operation at the power station berth.
Using Terra Marique’s integral dual ballast system, which is capable of pumping 40 tonnes of ballast water per minute, the vessel was positioned in a way that enabled the hydraulic roadway to be raised to some 8 m above its keel to match the corresponding quay height of the power station berth.
Mammoet was then able to roll off each of the four transformers. Following the successful discharge of the first two transformers, Terra Marique returned to Pembroke port overnight and returned to the power station berth the following day for the offloading of the remaining two transformers.
