Abnormal Load Services (ALS) has transported 1,186 rail wagons from a factory in Poland to Saudi Arabia.
The scope of the task including project management and ships agency as well as handling the port and site operations.
The project lasted 20 months and involved cargoes with dimensions of 14.35 m x 3.2 m x 4.5 m, weighing 30 tons (27.2 tonnes) each. The cargoes were moved by rail from the factory to Gdansk port.
The nature of the wagons' construction meant that handling the wagons by crane was not allowed, said ALS. At the port the wagons were therefore loaded onto roll trailers with embedded rails using a ramp, then lashed and secured for the sailing to Dammam.
A special protective material was placed on the wagons to shield the components from sandblasting and extreme temperatures in Saudi Arabia.
In Dammam the wagons were loaded onto road trailers for transportation to their final destination, where they were offloaded directly onto the rail tracks.
