Liebherr has installed the 145 m-long boom of the HLC 295000 – the largest crane ever built by the manufacturer – at the port of Rostock, Germany.
Using the rail-mounted heavy lift crane TCC 78000, which Liebherr inaugurated last August, the boom was connected to the crane’s slewing unit.
HLPFI readers will recall that the HLC 295000 has been designed for the offshore installation vessel Orion, owned by DEME Group. It will have a maximum lifting capacity of 5,000 tonnes at an outreach of 35 m.
Orion arrived in Rostock during November in preparation for the installation of the HLC 295000. All major crane elements have since been installed using the TCC 78000, which also lifted the upper part of the slewing unit and the A-frame.
“The boom was the last large construction element of the HLC that had to be lifted on the Orion,” said Robert Pitschmann, sales project manager of the HLC 295000. “There are still a few steps to finalise the construction of the crane.”
Once complete, Orion will be deployed for the Moray East offshore wind farm project in Scotland.
