British Salt has utilised custom-made lifting and rigging equipment to support the replacement of a 37-tonne heat exchanger at a salt production plant in Middlewich, UK.
As part of the replacement operation, Britlift designed and manufactured bespoke lifting and spreader beams, as well all lifting lugs, for British Salt, part of Tata Chemicals Europe.
Britlift engineers were invited to the production plant in order to assess the site and design a lifting system for the removal of the old exchanger and the installation of the replacement unit. To remove the old 7 m-tall unit from the building, it needed to be lifted and turned onto its side.
As the exchangers were not fitted with lifting points, in the early phase of the project Britlift designed a set of bolt-on lifting lugs that could be installed on the units.
The company then designed and manufactured a 400-tonne capacity lifting beam, a 25-tonne capacity tailing beam, and a 50-tonne capacity modular spreader beam. Britlift also supplied polyester round slings, a wire rope sling and a variety of Green Pin shackles.
