Egyptian Global Logistics (EGL) completed the transport and installation of transformers from the port of Safaga, which sits on the Red Sea, to the Aswan High Dam, also in Egypt.

Roads posed challenges which included sharp curves, steep gradients, and limited visibility.

Spanning a journey of more than 1,189 km, EGL transported a total of 13 transformers. Weighing 189 tonnes each, six of these were destined for the High Dam itself, with the remaining seven pieces (two of which weighed 116 tonnes each; five of which weighed 55 tonnes each) set for the Aswan 1 and Aswan 2 power plants, respectively. A further 1,500 cu m worth of accessories were also part of the delivery.

For the project, EGL used eight 18-axle Goldhofer modular trailers, 12 lowbed trailers, as well as a convoy of trucks for the accessories.

Following a route survey between the port and the site, EGL avoided narrower or older routes and bridges that would not support the weight of the project cargo. Optimal times for city crossings were calculated as well, often at night to minimise disruption.

Once the transformers had been delivered, EGL dismantled the existing ones and installed their replacements using its Enerpac jacking and skidding system.
