Mammoet was contracted to install a 150-ton (136-tonne) canopy over recently renovated public transport shelters in Chicago, Illinois.
The canopy, which, according to Mammoet, was shaped like a butterfly, formed part of a wider subway upgrade project by Chicago Transport Authority. The structure was constructed onsite and was relocated in one piece.
As a crane would block the busy main road, Mammoet proposed a solution using SPMTs, which enabled the structure to be moved around the construction site, while minimising disruption to the surrounding area.
