Collett & Sons has coordinated the delivery of six plate girders for Highways England’s M20 junction improvement scheme on behalf of structural steel specialist Severfield.
Each steel girder was manufactured at Severfield’s facility in Bolton. Collett was responsible for the transport of the components, measuring 41 m in length, from the facility to the installation site, approximately 290 miles (466.7 km) away.
Collett deployed six-axle and five-axle bogie trailers; each trailer was fitted with a turntable on both ends of the bogie for enhanced manoeuvrability. This solution featured a 60-degree steering angle and increased ground clearance, said Collett.
Prior to the road transport, the steel girders were loaded onto the trailers at the Severfield site using a 500-tonne capacity mobile crane.
The girders will be used for the construction of eastbound and westbound bridges that will form part of the new interchange at the junction.
