UK-based Collett & Sons has delivered a stator from Heysham port in Lancashire, England, to the Gretna grid stability facility in Scotland.

Collett & Sons opted for its 24-axle, 350-tonne capacity girder bridge frame to transport of the stator from Heysham to Longtown, just outside Carlisle. Along the way, route adjustments were made to avoid a weak bridge structure.

The girder bridge was demobilised, with the final 4 miles (6.4 km) completed using a 16-axle SPMT heavy-duty trailer combination. This provided 360-degree steering as well as vertical lifting and lowering of the load where route access was restricted.

Collett carried out prior planning and collaborated with local authorities to ensure the stator was delivered safely.

This project supports National Grid ESO’s – the nationalised energy system operator for the UK – Stability Pathfinder plan, enhancing grid stability for renewable energy integration.

Lately, Collett has been busy at work across the UK, delivering thermal storage tanks and carrying out an extraction and transport project.
