Collett & Sons has delivered 494 wind energy components to the Kype Muir wind farm, located approximately three miles (4.8 km) south of Strathaven, UK.
Collett was responsible for the transport of towers, nacelles, drive trains and hubs as well as 78 wind turbine blades, measuring 52 m in length.
Excluding the wind turbine blades, the components were loaded on a combination of step trailers, modular low loaders and clamp trailers for transportation to the project site.
The blades, meanwhile, were transported using Collett’s Nooteboom triple extendable Super Wing Carriers, which are extendable from 18.65 m to 64.3 m.
Along certain sections of the route, which required the combination to cross several bridges, Collett raised the front and the rear of the trailer to manoeuvre the blades and avoid contact with embankments and stone parapets.
Prior to the transportation, Collett created a 3D model of the loaded vehicle and produced a swept path analysis. The company then made the necessary route modifications, which included the removal of vegetation and road signage as well as widening certain sections of the route.
The components for the Senvion 3.4 MW turbines were transported to the project site from the ports of Grangemouth and Hull. Collett was also responsible for the offloading and storage of the cargoes at the ports.
