Spain-headquartered freight forwarder Altius has coordinated the delivery of a 1,300-tonne STS super-post-Panamax crane.
The crane measured 80 m high with its boom down, 24.5 m wide and 133 m long. It was loaded in Tarragona and unloaded in Vigo.
Altius said that its scope in the turnkey project included the reinforcement of the crane for the ocean voyage, marine securing, ro-ro loading and unloading with 84 SPMT axles, marine transportation on the semi-submersible vessel Zhong Ren 121, and the engineering and supervision of all operations.
It said that the ro-ro operations were completed in two hours due to the vessel’s ballast system and coordination.
The vessel moored parallel to the quay and before the ro-ro loading operation started, the crane was turned 90 degrees to facilitate a more gradual loading procedure. After the load-out and before moving the crane to the correct stowage and sailing position, the crane was rotated 90 degrees on the deck using a carousel manoeuvre. To reduce time spent on deck and consequently lay time, longitudinal and transversal sea fastening was bolted and preassembled prior to the load-out operation.
The crane is now at Termavi, the container terminal operated by Grupo Davila, and will be operational in the coming weeks.
