Abnormal Load Services (ALS) has transported a polyester silo from the Netherlands to the UK.
The silo measured more than 15 m in length and over 5 m in diameter, with the loaded truck measuring upwards of 27 m in length, over 5 m wide and almost 5.5 m high. Careful planning and research were therefore essential.
After being loaded onto a barge, the project cargo was sailed toward the Port of Rotterdam. Here, cranes were erected to reload onto bespoke cradles that secured the silo in the trailer’s bed. After shunting within the port, the truck then travelled to Hull, UK, via ferry.
Once in Hull, ALS’ team checked the cargo, made some adjustments to the cradles to guarantee a safer onward movement, before onward travel to the jobsite in North Yorkshire.
After successfully negotiating the complex route, which included narrow turns and working alongside tree surgeons to protect both the cargo and the surrounding environment, the silo was delivered to the client.
In February 2025, ALS and Wallenius Wilhelmsen wrapped up collaboration on a gigafactory project which lasted 18 months.
