German crane and logistics contractor Wasel has used a Liebherr LR 1600/2 crawler crane to replace parts of a pipework system at the Weisweiler power plant.
Configured with a main 102 m-long boom and a 78 m luffing fly jib, the Liebherr crane was placed next to the 117 m-high cooling tower to hoist glass fibre-reinforced plastic components weighing up to 12 tonnes.
According to Liebherr, nearly half of the crane’s 525 tonnes of ballast was required to raise and lower the long lattice boom. When working at a radii of up to 61 m, an additional 60 tonnes of ballast was used to support the derrick boom system.
