August 24 - Germany based crane rental company Sommer Kranverleih has used a 400-tonne capacity Grove GMK6400 mobile crane to replace a 1-tonne wind turbine generator at an onshore wind farm site near Bremen.
The crane was fitted with both a MegaWingLift and luffing jib attachment to increase its reach to 131 m, so that the crane could replace the generator - a job that typically would have required a crawler crane.
"Crawler cranes conventionally have been used to erect wind turbines due to the fact that they are some of the only mobile cranes capable of reaching these heights. But using a crawler crane to replace a generator that weighs only 1 tonne would have been far too expensive for this project," said Andreas Meyer, crane operator at Sommer.
