Marr Contracting has been awarded a contract to provide heavy lifting services for the BlueScope No. 6 blast furnace reline project at Port Kembla Steelworks (PKSW) in New South Wales, Australia.
The AUD1.15 billion (USD768 million) project will see improvements made to the furnace and upgrades to ancillary plant equipment. Investments are also being allocated towards lower-emissions steelmaking technologies.
Marr will mobilise a 330-tonne lift capacity M2480D tower crane on a custom 7.5 m x 7.5m piled foundation at the project. This set up offers the needed lifting capacity with a smaller footprint and long reach.
“At vertical industrial sites like a blast furnace we have always wished there was a ‘skyhook’ that could deliver a lift at any point on the plant, and now we have a solution with significant lifting capacity,” said PKSW project director, Justin Reed.
