June 13 - California crane rental firm Bigge Crane & Rigging and Warren County Energy Partners have teamed-up to erect heavy steam components for a power plant in Front Royal, Virginia, USA.

The pieces were lifted from an elevated girder system, propelled by an electric trolley and rough-set on to concrete pedestals.

The main section was a Mitsubishi steam generator weighing 544.3 tonnes. Using 56.4 m of girder runway the generator was lifted and moved approximately 47 m.

The lower casings, rotors and steam turbine parts were also moved using the same heavy lift system.

The installation was made more challenging due to the elevation of the concrete pedestals. The girder lifting system needed to be set 18.2 m in the air in order to position the generator and components on the foundations.

The project was planned with down-to-the-minute precision to minimise onsite storage costs and to expedite the setup and installation.
