Under-the-jib equipment developer Verton Australia is developing a remote rotating device that can be used as an alternative lifting method for the installation of wind turbine blades.
The device, which uses gyroscopic modules to rotate a suspended load, can be integrated into a lifting yoke while eliminating the need for tag lines.
Verton has teamed up with marine contractor Van Oord and heavy lifting and transport specialist Mammoet to develop the concept further.
“The system allows operators to rotate and install heavy loads without using tag lines. Not only is this safer for operators, but it also shortens the installation cycle times,” explained Wouter de Wildt, mentor from Van Oord.
Both Van Oord and Mammoet have committed to partner on the first three phases of the development. The first of which is the technical assessment stage, whereby the companies will partner with turbine manufacturer Vestas, which will provide the technical information and expertise required for the development of the new product.
