JOS will primarily be responsible for the maintenance and management of crew transfer vessels (CTV) for offshore wind projects and will utilise Akita Eisen’s knowledge of the local area, along with NYK’s experience of operating ships at the Ishikari Bay New Port offshore wind farm, north of Akita Prefecture.

In 2022, NYK signed a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Akita Prefecture, where the two entities are working across a range of fields, including the promotion of renewable energy projects. As part of efforts to revitalise the local community in Japan’s Akita Prefecture, JOS will actively recruit local talent.

In July 2024, NYK began assessing wind-assisted propulsion as a means to reduce vessel emissions.
