St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) has appointed Demetrios (Jim) Athanasiou as president and CEO of its board of directors.
He replaces Terence F. Bowles, who is retiring as the longest-serving president at the seaway, having taken up the role in November 2010.
Before joining the SLSMC, Bowles was president and ceo of the Iron Ore Company of Canada and worked for many years with QIT Fer et Titane du Quebec. During Bowles’ tenure, SLSMC received the 2015 OECD International Transport Forum Promising Transport Innovation Award for the development of its hands-free mooring and remote operations. According to the SLSMC board, this was the most significant change to the operation of the Seaway since its opening in 1959.
Athanasiou joined SLSMC in 2008 as corporate mechanical engineering manager. He moved on to roles including vice president engineering and technology, and he was involved in the recent renewal of a 20-year management, operation and maintenance agreement between the SLSMC and the Canadian government.
