Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) will discontinue its offshore pipe laying activities and will focus entirely on its heavy lift, decommissioning and renewable energy activities.

HMC will structure its business around the transport and installation of offshore structures; the decommissioning of platforms; and the execution of projects in the renewable energy sector. According to HMC, the decision follows an evaluation of its position in the pipe laying market, which continues to suffer from significant overcapacity.

The company will convert its deepwater construction vessel Aegir into a dedicated heavy lift vessel.

During the transition period Pieter Heerema, current chairman, will take up the additional role of chief executive of HMC prior to the appointment of a permanent ceo.

"Dictated by the difficult market conditions we have to change into a different kind of organisation," said Heerema. "I deeply regret the consequent loss of trusted and professional colleagues who have helped building our strong reputation in the offshore (pipe lay) market. At the same time we have to continue our process of transforming into a marine contractor which is leaner, more efficient and capable of benefiting from the opportunities the offshore market still represents."

The company, headquartered in the Netherlands, will honour its commitments in ongoing projects.
