HLPFI reviews the shortlisted entries for the 2024 Project of the Year award, sponsored by Blue Bell Shipping.
This award will be presented to a logistics provider for the successful coordination of a large-scale, complex logistics project, involving the door-to-door delivery of multiple oversize and/or heavy cargoes. This award can be entered jointly to reflect logistics and/or transport partners or individually.
Our 2024 shortlist includes:
Allelys and Rolf Riedl
Allelys and Rolf Riedl collaborated and executed the delivery of a 158-tonne transformer, a 352-tonne generator and 91 general cargo components from across Europe to the Rothienorman substation in Scotland. The project demonstrated essential industry and logistical knowledge, as well as an ability to overcome numerous challenges during a delivery, from navigating local infrastructure to overcoming severe weather.
CJ ICM
CJ ICM has completed another major project in Iraq, where South Refineries Company constructed a new plant to enhance processing capacity of Basrah Refinery. Throughout the project, over 268 out-of-gauge cargoes were handled, with scope including port handling, storage, transport and on-site lifting. The project set records for the largest and heaviest cargo ever transported and lifted in Iraq. Largescale surveys and civil works enabled transportation across the 100 km route, utilising over 900 hydraulic axles.
Comark
In 2023, Comark took on its biggest project yet, a huge task involving the transport of four giant transformers from the Slovenian capital Ljubljana to Vietnam through the Port of Koper. The project required 8 months of careful planning and many challenges had to be overcome.
deugro
deugro Australia, in cooperation with its PNG branch, successfully completed the delivery of out-of-gauge components for a complex construction project at a remote site in Papua New Guinea. The scope of the project involved tackling limited infrastructure challenges; the coordination and training of an over 1,100-person on-site workforce; quality, health, safety, environment, and security (QHSES) requirements; and – last but not least – crocodiles and snakes.
DHL Industrial Projects
One of DHL Industrial Projects’ largest moves to date, the company was contracted to manage the transport, engineering and logistics for the delivery of 10 topside modules from Brazil to Singapore, utilising ocean chartering under FIOST terms. The project included the transport of the 3,000-tonne module, M11.
DSV
DSV transported 1,700 cargo units – including around 20 super-size items – on behalf of international consortium, Hyundai Engineering Company and Tecnicas Reunidas, for the largest petrochemical investment project in Europe over the last 20 years. DSV, together with its partner Sarens, was responsible for the transport of the cargo from the seaport of Gdańsk to the destination point in Płock. The logistics team ensured that the project was completed a year earlier than expected.
Fracht Group
In early 2020, Fracht/Dextra was awarded the Clean Fuel Refinery project (Package B Offshore), which involved the engineering services and transport of 72 modules via deck carrier from three different locations in Thailand to Singapore. Fracht/Dextra began the engineering work – design, fabrication and installation of sea fastening equipment – for this massive project in January 2022. The first shipment took place at the beginning of the following year and the company successfully finished the project with the delivery of the last module in March 2024.
Prism Logistics
Supporting the HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited project, Prism Logistics handled the delivery of 34 over-dimensional cargoes, weighing in at 13,000 tonnes. The units were moved 1,300 km by land, deploying 1,400 hydraulic axle lines, and 2,100 nautical miles by sea to reach the Barmer site within 364 days.
Total Movements
Total Movements successfully transported crucial refinery packages, some weighing up to 1,280 tonnes, for the remote Numaligarh Refinery project in India. The company collaborated in order to advance the logistics planning and execution, and employed cutting-edge transport methods and technology. Permissions were required from various authorities, while seamless stakeholder coordination ensured the smooth operation of the project.
The winner of this year’s Project of the Year award will be announced at the Heavy Lift Awards 2024 ceremony on October 23 at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London. To join the celebrations, book your place today.
