HLPFI reviews the shortlisted entries for the 2024 Overland Transport Provider of the Year award, sponsored by Goldhofer.
This award will be presented to an equipment-owning company that has executed an outstanding overland project cargo movement – by road, rail or inland waterway – in the last 12 months. Entries should demonstrate a commitment to the safe, efficient and innovative transport of heavy and oversize project cargoes.
Our 2024 shortlist includes:
Allelys
Allelys played a key role within the UK’s energy sector by transporting and installing critical infrastructure, with units ranging in weight from 60 kg to 333 tonnes, from three UK ports to different power plants across the UK. This required significant engineering expertise and a combination of girder frames, flat top trailers, SPMTs, semi low loaders, water decks and 40 ft (12.2 m) trucks. Uniting more than 25 external stakeholders along the way, Allelys accumulated a total of over 22,000 road transport miles.
Collett & Sons
Collett & Sons successfully executed the delivery of 88 wind turbine components for the Drumlins Park wind farm project in Ireland, showcasing exceptional logistics expertise and commitment to safety. Partnering with GE, Collett transported blade and tower section components for eight GE 158RD turbines, ensuring timely and efficient delivery.
Express Global Logistics
Express Global Logistics (EXG) completed a challenging project involving a massive amine regenerator column for an Indian Oil Company Limited (IOCL) refinery project in Panipat, India. The column, weighing 240 tonnes and measuring 41.6 m in length, had to be transported over 1,800 km. Numerous obstacles had to be overcome during the journey, including navigating through four states, managing electric lines, and addressing road height limitations. EXG successfully secured permissions, dismantled and reinstalled infrastructure, and completed the project within a tight timeframe of 100 days.
J M Baxi Group
J M Baxi’s entry highlighted its delivery of three oversize modules, ranging in weight from 5,500-6,700 tonnes, for a major project in India. The movement set a new benchmark for India’s heaviest single module transportation along the way.
Mammoet
Mammoet delivered a delayed coking unit (DCU) reactor, weighing 1,500 tonnes and measuring over 50 m tall, to the Orlen Lietvua refinery in Mažeikiai, Lithuania. The refinery is the only one in the Baltic states, and a programme was launched by Orlen in 2000 to modernise the facilities’ refining efficiency and achieve future EU fuel quality requirements. The reactor, which forms part of the upgrade project, was the heaviest load ever transported in Lithuania.
Vanguard
Vanguard completed the record-breaking transportation of the longest wind blades ever moved in Africa. The blades, measuring 82.5 m long, required a transport arrangement with a total length of 95 m, utilising Vanguard’s six new TII Scheuerle rotor blade transport system (RBTS) trailers to transport the wind farm components approximately 450 km from Coega Port to the site. This was the first time that this equipment had been used outside of Europe and was the longest distance the equipment had been used to transport blades.
The winner of this year’s Overland Transport Provider of the Year award will be announced at the Heavy Lift Awards 2024 ceremony on October 23 at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London. To join the celebrations, book your space today.
